Ordering and Specifying WoodMax Shutters
Naturally, we always start with your ideas regarding the design you want. There are several variables to consider, like shutter design, finish type and associated wood species, and how the shutters will be installed or mounted.
The purists will tell you that you have to mount your shutters on hinges and size them so they cover your window opening when closed. This is absolutely correct if you want your shutters to be functional in addition to being beautiful. However, many people want the traditional look of shutters, but do not actually need them to be functional and close to protect their window opening. In this case, shutters are often mounted directly to the wall of your home and not on hinges, and they will not operate. In either case, we are happy to help you with the design of your shutters.
We have several basic configurations. Please see the Shutter Styles PDF. It shows several styles of shutters from which you may choose, and of course we are happy to make custom designs as well.
Regarding wood types for exterior shutters, we offer Western Red Cedar and we are one of a very few companies to offer Thermally-modified Ash or Oak. Cedar offers excellent natural resistance to exterior weather exposure, and the Thermally Modified treatment produces weather resistance equal or better to that of Cedar, with no added preservatives or other chemicals. Any of these wood types are suitable for a stained or painted finish. Paint will always hold up better to the weather than a stained finish, so it is recommended if less frequent maintenance is desired. Interior shutters can be made from many different types of wood, so we can match the rest of the woodwork in your home or place of business. Contact us for ideas and options.
Shutters are almost always sold in pairs, so count and measure your window openings to determine the sizes and quantities of shutters that you will need.
